Where does it live?

The guessing is what kills houseplants. Not you.

An Olla Watering Spike is an unglazed terracotta reservoir you bury in the pot, beside the plant. You keep it filled. The soil draws water out through the wall as it dries, so your plant gets it at the roots, at its own pace.

Instead of relying only on water poured from above, which can run down the sides and out the drainage holes, the Spike releases moisture directly into the surrounding potting mix.

Why it won’t drown them

Drier soil draws more water. Moist soil slows it down.

Fired terracotta is full of tiny pores. As the soil becomes moist, that movement naturally slows. The result is a gradual release of water directly into the soil around the Spike.

How to use your terracotta watering spike

Fill your Spike, let the plant take what it needs, and refill it when it’s low.

Soak and bury

Soak it for fifteen minutes first. New terracotta is dry, and soaking lets the clay release water evenly from the start. Then dig a small hole beside the plant so you part the roots instead of cutting them, set the Spike in, and firm the soil around it.

Fill and cap

Pour water through the top and cap it. The cap stops evaporation and keeps unwanted pests out of the opening.

Refill it

Lift the cap and check the water level. About once a week indoors, more for thirsty tropicals in warm, bright rooms, less in low light. A large plant in a hot room can empty a watering spike in a few days.

Houseplants still alive!

I left my potted philodendrons and calatheas (6- to 8-inch pots) unattended for 4 weeks in late winter. These spikes kept the soil moist just long enough for the plants to survive. I returned to see none of the leaves or stems drooping!

The spikes were obviously dry after 4 weeks without any refills. If I had to guess, they should be refilled every 5-10 days depending on the season and room temperature.

I much prefer this spike style because inverted wine bottles are too top heavy for small pots. Lids are a bonus for keeping insects away from the water. Note that you must soak the spikes prior to use, and this step can be time-consuming if you are in a hurry.

Works well indoors

These are great tools for indoor plants but they still empty out pretty quick, I fill them every other day it seems and for outdoors in hot climates the water empties even quicker. Love the way they work though and my indoor ficus enjoys the moisture it provides the soil, so I happy with them. The mini Ollas that look more like vases would last longer I think because they hold more water. Would recommend and will continue using.

They Worked Great!

I was hesitant to buy this because it doesn’t seem to hold a lot of water approximately a quarter cup of water, but for my smaller plants, a small size actually worked I put two in each planter and after seven days of being on vacation my plants were very healthy when I returned, if you have a medium large sized pots, just make sure you have enough room because they’re supposed to go in all the way up to the cap, I recommend this, gave me peace of mind
