Low maintenance: Will last for years with minimal care.

Avoid cracking: Keep pot moist while in ground and remove from ground during freezing conditions.

Cleaning: Use a 1:1 mixture of water and vinegar between seasons or repottings and use scrub brush where roots may have attached to outside of Olla.

Store: In dry location free of the elements.

An Olla is an unglazed terracotta watering pot you bury in a bed, row, grow bag, or container. You keep it filled. The soil draws water through the terracotta as it dries, so your plants get it at the roots, at their own pace.

Fired terracotta is full of tiny pores. As the surrounding soil dries, it draws water through the terracotta. As the soil becomes moist, that movement naturally slows. An Olla responds to the moisture already around it.

How to use an Olla watering pot

Fill your Olla, let your plants take what they need, and refill it when it’s low.

Soak and bury

Soak it for 15 minutes before burying it. Bury it up to the neck, pressing the soil firmly against the sides as you fill the hole back in.

Fill and cap

Pour water through the top and cap it. The lid stops evaporation and keeps out dirt and mosquitoes.

Refill it

Lift the lid and look. Most gardens need topping up once or twice a week, more often in real heat.

Amazing little life changers

I live in Southern California and mostly garden in containers. It is almost impossible to keep my edibles watered with the hot, intense weather. These are amazing. I have 5 small ones in veggie pots and 1 large one in my fig tree container. All of my plants are thriving and I am saving so much time and water using these reservoirs. You do need to remove them in fall

Removing them in fall is my only drawback so far. But it is my first year with them. We just came through with high heat and the plants stay water without over watering. I love that. And they water by the roots. I have all sizes. Its my big project for the year. Gallon pots for raised garden beds. Quarts for large pots. And 2 pint ones for baskets.

Great When You Don’t Have Irrigation

We have a few garden beds that do not have irrigation and these pots have been fantastic at watering our plants at the roots. In the bed where they are placed, everything is thriving despite drought conditions. They are expensive but are effective. We have to refill every 5 days during 90-degree weather.

Great for Watering When I Can’t

This little jar keeps the soil moist in my pot of Bee Balm. My plants weren’t thriving because they needed moister soil, and I wasn’t able to keep up with their water needs. I soaked the Olla for 15 minutes as indicated in the instructions, and planted it up to the neck in my barrel planter, filling it up to the top with water, and replacing the lid. I’ll check it weekly and fill as needed. The small size is perfect for the planter. The water will seep out into the surrounding soil and help keep consistent moisture in planter. If you live in an area that freezes, I recommend removing the Olla and storing it inside over the winter.
